Relational Databases, Normalization, and SQL

A database is an application that can store and retrieve data very rapidly. The relational bit refers to how the data is stored in the database and how it is organized. When we talk about a database, we mean a relational database, in fact, an RDBMS: Relational Database Management System. In a relational database, all data is stored in tables. These have the same structure repeated in each row (like a spreadsheet) and it is the relations between the tables that make it a relational table. Before relational databases were invented (in the 1970s), other types of database such as hierarchical databases were used. However relational databases have been very successful for companies like Oracle, IBM, and Microsoft. The open source world also has RDBMS. Commercial Databases OracleIBM DB 2Microsoft SQL ServerIngres. The first commercial RDBMS. Free/Open Source Databases MySQLPostgresSQLSQLite Strictly these are not relational databases but RDBMS. They provide security, encryption, user access and can process SQL queries. Who Was Ted Codd? Codd was a computer scientist who devised the laws of normalization in 1970. This was a mathematical way of describing the properties of a relational database using tables. He came up with 12 laws that describe what a relational database and an RDBMS does and several laws of normalization that describe the properties of relational data. Only data that had been normalized could be considered relational. What Is Normalization? Consider a spreadsheet of client records that is to be put into a relational database. Some clients have the same information, say different branches of the same company with the same billing address. In a spreadsheet, this address is on multiple rows. In turning the spreadsheet into a table, all the clients text addresses must be moved into another table and each assigned a unique ID- say the values 0,1,2. These values are stored in the main client table so all rows use the ID, not the text. A SQL statement can extract the text for a given ID. What Is a Table? Think of it as being like a rectangular spreadsheet made up of rows and columns. Each column specifies the type of data stored (numbers, strings or binary data - such as images). Unlike a spreadsheet where the user is free to have different data on each row, in a database table, every row can only contain the types of data that were specified. In C and C, this is like an array of structs, where one struct holds the data for one row. For more information see Normalizing a database in the Database Design part of databases.about.com. What Are the Different Ways of Storing Data in a Database? There are two ways: Via a Database Server.Via a Database File. Using a database file is the older method, more suited to desktop applications. E.G. Microsoft Access, though that is being phased out in favor of Microsoft SQL Server. SQLite is an excellent public domain database written in C that holds data in one file. There are wrappers for C, C, C# and other languages. A database server is a server application running locally or on a networked PC. Most of the big databases are server based. These take more administration but are usually faster and more robust. How Does an Application Communicate With Database Servers? Generally, these require the following details. IP or Domain name of the server. If it is the on the same PC as you, use 127.0.0.1 or localhost as the dns name.Server Port For MySQL this is usually 3306, 1433 for Microsoft SQL Server.User Name and PasswordName of the Database There are many client applications that can talk to a database server. Microsoft SQL Server has Enterprise Manager to create databases, set security, run maintenance jobs, queries and of course design and modify database tables. What Is SQL?: SQL is short for Structured Query Language and is a simple language that provides instructions for building and modifying the structure of databases and for modifying the data stored in the tables. The main commands used to modify and retrieve data are: Select - Fetches data.Insert - Inserts one or more rows of data.Update - Modifies existing row(s) of dataDelete - Deletes rows of data. There are several ANSI/ISO standards such as ANSI 92, one of the most popular. This defines a minimum subset of supported statements. Most compiler vendors support these standards. Conclusion Any nontrivial application can use a database and a SQL-based database is a good place to start. Once you have mastered the configuration and administering of the database then you have to learn SQL to make it work well. The speed at which a database can retrieve data is astonishing and modern RDBMS are complex and highly optimized applications. Open source databases like MySQL are fast approaching the power and usability of the commercial rivals and drive many databases on websites. How to Connect to a Database in Windows using ADO Programmatically, there are various APIs that provide access to database servers. Under Windows, these include ODBC and Microsoft ADO. [h3[Using ADO So long as there is a provider- software that interfaces a database to ADO, then the database can be accessed. Windows from 2000 has this built in. Try the following. It should work on Windows XP, and on Windows 2000 if youve ever installed MDAC. If you havent and want to try this, visit Microsoft.com, do a search for MDAC Download and download any version, 2.6 or higher. Create an empty file called test.udl. Right click in Windows Explorer on the file and do open with, you should see Microsoft Data Access - OLE DB Core Services. This dialog lets you connect to any database with an installed provider, even excel spreadsheets! Select the first tab (Provider) as opens by default at the the Connection tab. Select a provider then click Next. The data source name shows the different types of device available. After filling in username and password, click the Test Connection button. After you press the ok button, you can open the test.udl with file with Wordpad. It should contain text like this. [oledb] ; Everything after this line is an OLE DB initstring ProviderSQLOLEDB.1;Persist Security InfoFalse;User IDsa;Initial Catalogdhbtest;Data Source127.0.0.1 The third line is the important one, it contains the configuration details. If your database has a password, it will be shown here, so this is not a secure method! This string can be built into applications that use ADO and will let them connect to the specified database. Using ODBC ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) provides an API based interface to databases. There are ODBC drivers available for just about every database in existence. However, ODBC provides another layer of communication between an application and the database and this can cause performance penalties.

Being An Alcoholic - Original Writing - 1676 Words

This time they decided to send me out of town to a program in Arizona. I arrived there on a Friday, however, the program wasn t to commence until that Monday. There was no way I was going to check in and be on lockdown, knowing that I still had a weekend to play with. I checked into a hotel and prepared myself for, what I thought would turn out, a great time. I learned that things don t always turn out as planned. I hit the town running at full speed seeking the first bar I could locate to get things kicked off. Before I knew it, I had gone from one bar to another, even catching taxis to get to and from them. When I made it back to the hotel room, I was pretty loaded and should have called it quits. But there s another thing I†¦show more content†¦But the party didn t end there. Later that Saturday afternoon, I was released on my own reconnaissance and I headed back to the room. I still had a full day to enjoy prior to checking in on that Monday and I had no plans on allowing it to go to waste. I had my wallet with my debit card in it and conveniently enough, there was an ATM machine in the lobby of the hotel. I withdrew additional funds from my bank account and once again I was out and about in pursuit of some to drink. I tried to convince myself to be more careful the second time around because I didn t want to repeat what I had just experienced the night before. Early on, everything was going as planned. I was drinking, feeling good and was still partially coherent. I was feeling well enough to call it quits, but the night still seemed young and I thought I d challenge a few more shots prior to retiring for that evening. I believe I can vaguely remember having one more drink before everything went pitch black again. By the time the lights came back on, once again, there I was on the county s floor as a repeat offender of public intoxication. There was, however, something different about this time. Before I was released that Sunday, one of the deputies pulled me to the side for a quick chat. He told me that I was found in a dark space behind an abandoned building with my shirt open and my pockets turned inside out missing all of its contents. I

Health Care System Evolution Paper - 1313 Words

Health Care System Evolution Paper This paper will discuss how HMOs have influenced current health care systems. HMOs have been able to reduce health care cost in many ways and have also faced many difficulties along the way. Many Americans years ago did not have health coverage and we are still seeing this today because of the cost of these plans. HMOs or Health Maintenance Organizations are health care plans that reduce health care cost. Members of an HMO are usually required to make a co-payment when seeing a physician. A lot of time members have a deductible they will have to pay before they are able to see their physician too. These are just some of the ways HMOs try to keep health care cost down. There are some 75 million†¦show more content†¦With a POS plan, members can use doctors who are within the network or those who are not in order to receive their care. If member do choose doctors outside their networks they will have to pay more to have those services performed. With the POS plan members must have a primary care physician. With a PPO plan members have more options over who they can see. Members do not need a primary care physician with this type of plan (What is an HMO? 2009). HMOs have been running strong for years but to remain viable they are going to have to make some changes. Considerable evidence points to physician and consumer dissatisfaction with HMO’s. Consumers are not satisfied with primary care physicians as gatekeepers, limited provider choice, physician profiling, requirement of prior approval and constraints on covered treatments (Fang, Liu, Rizzo, 2009). Studies have shown a slight decline of the insured population covered by HMOs. In 2000-2001, 55 percent of the insured population was covered and in 2003 it dropped to 51 percent (Fang, Liu, Rizzo, 2009). President Obama signed into law a new health care plan that will help many Americans. With the way things were going, many people were not able to carry health insurance and those companies that were carrying insurance had to drop coverage for many of their employees. Many doctors and big HMO companies have made a killing over the years, and want to keep doing so. Herpes Herpes is one of the common of more than 30 different sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) in America today. Herpes is an infection that is caused by one of two closely related viruses, herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both of which are very easily caught, have similar symptoms, and can occur on different parts of the body. Even though it is most common to see the virus HSV-1 appear as oral herpes and to see the virus HSV-2 appear as genital herpes. Most often herpes is a relatively harmless disease that is rarely life threatening. The most common form of herpes is oral herpes and usually shows up on the lips or inside of the mouth as â€Å"cold sores† or â€Å"fever blisters†.†¦show more content†¦Very severe outbreaks may have symptoms that include swollen and tender lymph glands in the groin, throat, or under the arms, and even flu-like feelings such as fever, chills, headache, and a general run down feeling. The spread of herpes may be attributed to a variety of activities ranging from touching and kissing to more intimate activities such as vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse. The time when the virus is most likely to be spread is when the sores, such as cold sores or fever blisters, are open and weeping, during this time the virus may be spread from one partner to another or from one part of the body to another. Although the chance of getting genital herpes from an infected partner whom has no symptoms are only about 10 out of every hundred or 10 percent. It is unlikely, however, that contact with toilet seats, moist towels or similar objects spread herpes. The most commonly infected areas are moist areas of the mouth, anus, vulva, vagina, penis, or the eyes. Even though herpes in many cases is easily spread between two individuals, it is definitely possible to prevent the spreading of herpes to others. Compare the Presentation of Nature in one Heaney poem, one Clarke poem and two pre-1914 poems Essay My essay will compare the presentation of nature in Seamus Heaneys Death of a Naturalist, Gillian Clarkes A Difficult Birth, Easter 1998 as well as Patrolling Barnegat and Sonnet from the pre-1914 bank. Nature is a theme which can be represented in different ways. Poets choose nature as a theme in their poems for different reasons. Some choose nature as they see it as something beautiful where as others choose it due to its power to be cruel and destructive. Many poets use nature as a background to a human experience and is often used to represent emotions and events. In Death of a Naturalist Seamus Heaney uses nature as theme to desribe his change of emotions. In A Difficult Birth Gillian Clarke uses nature as a theme to represent the Irish peace talks, an event which was occuring at Easter time in 1998. A number of pre-1914 poets also use nature to represent what their poem is about. In Patrolling Barnegat the poet Walt Whitman uses nature to show how destructive it can be through a storm and in Sonnet John Clare uses nature to describe the beatry of the countryside during the summer months. The way in which the poets structure their poems relates to the use of nature in representing the emotions and events of the poems. For example, in Death of a Naturalist, the first stanza is about Heaneys enjoyment at working with the frogspawn, but best of was the warm thick slobber. In contrast, the second stanza is about his change of perception of the frogs as he is now frightened of them, I sickened, turned and ran. Similarly, in A Difficult Birth each stanza shows a different stage of the birth and also peace process. For example, in the third stanza, the lamb wont come suggests that there are difficulties, then in the fourth stanza, the poet says we strain together and the lamb is born. This allows us to see the difficulties of this natural event and it gives us an idea of how hard the peace deal was the negotiate. As the structure changed being the stanza in this case, as does the situation. In Death of a Naturalist his situation changes from one stanza to another and the same occurs in A Difficult Birth. Both of the pre-1914 poems also use structure in a way in which it relates to the theme of nature. Both poems are one large sentence with Patrolling Barnegat only using commas at the end of each line and Sonnet doesnt use any punctuation at all. Although both are similar in this way of structuring I believe it is done for differing reasons in each of the poems. In Patrolling Barnegat the long sentence is put in place to create a sense that the storm is happening at the present time rather than writing about it in the past. Where as in Sonnet, I believe this way of structuring has been put in place because it helps the poet create one image on the countryside rather than seperate images meshing together as one. Another way in which the structure is used in a way in which it relates to the theme of nature is the rhyme scheme. In Patrolling Barnegat, at the end of every line each word ends with -ing such as remitting, careering and slanting, I believe this is done to again emphasise that the event of the storm is happening as the poem is being written. The rhyme scheme of Sonnet differs to that of Patrolling Barnegat. In Sonnet there is a simple rhyme scheme in which two lines have two endings which have the same sound and/or spelling. I believe Clare uses such a simple rhyme scheme because it is like a summery day in the countryside, uncomplicated and simple in its beauty. All four poets use language and imagery from nature to make the events and emotions within the poem seem more vivid. .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f , .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f .postImageUrl , .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f , .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f:hover , .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f:visited , .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f:active { border:0!important; } .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f:active , .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0974244df3d31efd507284de37ea684f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: How does Shakespeare and Duffy approach the theme of love EssayIn Death of a Naturalist, Heaney uses war-like language to desribe the situation he finds himself in with the frogs, he uses words such as Invaded and grenades to describe the frogs and their actions when the frogs enter the dam. He sees the frogs as being things terrifying like war, and uses this sort of language to desribe it. Patrolling Barnegat also uses miliatary words to describe the on going situation. Whitman uses words such as advancing to create the idea that the storm is like a battleground between the land and the sea. The people who are patrolling the beach are there to try and prevent the land fro m attack. The same can be said about Gillian Clarkes poem A Difficult Birth, this poem has language about the war which was happening in Northern Ireland such as since Easter 1916, exhausted, tamed by pain, showing how the war has effecteds the people of the country. The difference between the two poems of Heaney and Whitman compared the that of Clarke is that there seems to have been no resolution in Death of a Naturalist, Heaney still frightened of the frogs, and Patrolling Barnegat, the storm seems to be ongoing due to the -ing endings. Where as in A Difficult Birth there was a resolution, peace, as shown metaphorically by the birth of the lamb, which represented the birth of peace. Each of the poets is trying to use the image of Nature to express different feelings and emit their different attitudes. Three of the poems being Death of a Naturalist, A Difficult Birth and Patrolling Barnegat all use nature to describe the fear they are feeling or other people are feeling. In Death of a Naturalist Heaney shows fear as he is frightened by the frogs as shown by I sickened, turned, and ran, showing that he fears the frogs so much that he felt the need to run away. A Difficult Birth shows fear as the people of Northern Ireland feared the peace deal would never go through, this is shown in the poem metaphorically through the fear that the lamb would never be born, But the lamb wont come. Fear is shown in Patrolling Barnegat as the people patrolling Barnegat fear that if the sea does attack then they will perish so they act cautiously. As well as fear, three of the poems also contain happiness, these three poems being Sonnet, Death of a Naturalist and A Difficult Birth. Sonnet is a generally happy poem. John Clare seems to be happy due to it being summer and him being in the countryside. Death of a Naturalist begins with Seamus Heaney being happy workin with the frogspawn but then his perception changes where as in A Difficult Birth the poem begins in a worrying tone, but once the two lambs are borned meaning the peace deal has been signed then there is happiness. In conclusion, all four of these poems are made to be more powerful through their use of nature. Natural images are used to help us imagine feelings and ideas more clearly, even if it is beyond our personal experiences. I find the use of nature to represent emotions particularly moving in A Difficult Birth as it enables the poet to desribe their emotions and feelings of at first worry and then relief and joy in a very well worked way.
